Hatred Is Not Stronger Than Bonds

چکیده
Abstract One of the most disturbing phenomena during episodes mass violence concerns individuals who hated a specific group and harmed some its members while making exceptions for people they had relationship with. A preexisting social tie, not moral consciousness, produces this aversion to harming party relationship, even if rescuing vulnerable contradicts personal beliefs, orders, or loyalty. Hatred is stronger than bonds only when latter are weak, fraught, missing in first place. I call phenomenon relational exceptionalism . Bringing anthropological literature on interpersonal relationships bear studies violence, article illustrates that trigger exceptionalism, requires reciprocity, trust, obligations, affinities, nearness, but degree autonomy.

Bad Is Stronger Than Good
The greater power of bad events over good ones is found in everyday events, major life events (e.g., trauma), close relationship outcomes, social network patterns, interpersonal interactions, and learning processes. Bad emotions, bad parents, and bad feedback have more impact than good ones, and bad information is processed more thoroughly than good. The self is more motivated to avoid bad self...
متن کاملStronger-Than-Quantum Correlations
After an elementary derivation of Bell’ s inequality, classical, quantum mechanical , and stronger-than-quantum correlation functions for 2-particle-systems are discussed. Special functions are investigated which give rise to an extreme violation of Bell’ s inequality by the value of 4. Referring to a specific quantum system it is shown that under certain conditions such an extreme violation wo...
متن کاملQuantum One-Way Communication is Exponentially Stronger Than Classical Communication
In STOC 1999, Raz presented a (partial) function for which there is a quantum protocol communicating only O(log n) qubits, but for which any classical (randomized, bounded-error) protocol requires poly(n) bits of communication. That quantum protocol requires two rounds of communication. Ever since Raz’s paper it was open whether the same exponential separation can be achieved with a quantum pro...
متن کاملThe k-variable property is stronger than H-dimension k
We study the notion of H-dimension and the formally stronger kvariable property, as considered by Gabbay and Immerman & Kozen. We exhibit a class of flows of time that has H-dimension 3, and admits a finite expressively complete set of one-dimensional connectives, but does not have the k-variable property for any finite k. Published in Journal of Philosophical Logic 26 (1997) 81–101. Publisher’...
